Inland S-57
What are Inland Navigational Charts?
Inland S-57 charts (Inland ENCs) are official digital vector charts produced by national inland waterway authorities in accordance with the International Hydrographic Organisation's (IHO) product specification S-57.
The Inland ECDIS standard is compatible with the globally valid ECDIS for maritime navigation. In this standard the information content has been supplemented with requirements for inland navigation. Thus it is ensured that by means of Inland ECDIS data (charts) produced for ocean navigation can also be viewed on inland navigation vessels. Inland ECDIS software can display ECDIS charts for maritime navigation, ECDIS software can display Inland ECDIS charts, but without displaying objects such as notice marks, buoys and locks, etc. which are specific to inland navigation.
Who produces/provides Inland Navigational Charts?
The charts are usually produced by the national inland waterway authorities. The basis for the production of charts are images taken of the areas concerned by aerial surveys, surveys or other measurement procedures.
Our Inland ENC service collects ENCs from the following Organisations: via donau – Österreichische Wasserstraßen GmbH (Austria), CRUP inland navigation development centre (Croatia), Waterway Charts/SPS Praha (Czech Republic), Wasser- und Schifffahrtsdirektion Südwest (Germany), Ministry of Transport, PublicWorks & WaterManagemt - Rijkswaterstaat (Netherlands), River Administration of the lower Danube Galati (Romania), Inland Waterways Maintenance & Development Agency (Serbia), Rheinschifffahrtsdirektion Basel (Switzerland), US Army Corps of Engineers (USA).
Data formats
Inland ENCs are only offered in directENC format. - The directENC format is the SevenCs ECDIS Kernel SENC (System Electronic Navigational Chart) format. SENC is the data base, transformed by ECDIS from the ENC (S-57 data) for optimum use, and updated by appropriate means. It simplifies and accelerates the access to the ENCs and their handling.
The directENC data are pre-converted from S-57 format and has been approved by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (BSH). It acknowledged that directENC provides "a complete storage and availability of information content of ENC data format S-57, Edition 3.1 without changes and losses". This means that directENC can be used officially for distribution of the ENC data.
Data encryption
To ensure protection and security, Inland ENCs are only delivered in encrypted format. Usually this data are provided as Inland ENC Units which need the so called ‘Chart Access Key’ for data import. The system unique SevenCs ECDIS Kernel ‘Hardware-Id’ is required for key generation for the ordered ENC Units.
