ChartSynC

ENC Updates via E-mail

Your system for managing Updates of ARCS charts and official ENCs!

The updating service for the digital charts, including but not limited to the official ENCs of PRIMAR and UKHO/IC-ENC, operates via automatically scheduled email or FTP download, according to customer preferences. The weekly transmission is always done only with customized corrections according to the vessels digital charts folio! The service is also used for correcting ARCS raster charts.

How it all works? The shore-based ChartSynC Server manages database of updates to ARCS and S-57 charts, compresses them to archives and sends them as attachments to Emails. The ChartSynC Client on-board the ship receives the updates and keeps track of them. It works with your existing equipment – there is no need for expensive special receivers!

The ChartSynC Client links with standard Email programs. Most Email clients allow storing selected Email attachments in dedicated directories. The ChartSynC Client monitors such a dedicated directory for Email attachments with extension *.cys and opens them automatically for further processing.

An update can also incorporate new charts with permits. The charts are extracted and stored inside the database of the ChartSynC Client for further use by the ECDIS.

To facilitate the frequent updating that an ECDIS requires, the ChartSynC Client provides basic functionality for burning CD-ROMs, writing the data to hard disc, floppy or USB stick for immediate import into an ECDIS.

If the updates received from an HO exceed the size limit set for attachments, ChartSynC Server splits the attachments into chunks of acceptable size and forwards them in several emails instead of just one. The ChartSynC Client is able to accept these parts in any order. It will reassemble the parts into a valid update file and ECDIS will treat it as any other update. The ChartSynC Client will also provide permit files using the *.cys update format for new editions or re-issues.

There is no better or more reliable way to keep your charts up to date. Use the ChartSynC service once and you’ll never want to do it any other way!

How does it work?

Extracting of updates and permits

An update archive incorporates navigational charts and permits. The data is extracted from the archive and registered inside the ChartSynC Client. The ChartSynC Client uses a database to distinguish between new files and those that have been extracted before.

Exporting of data

Once the update is unpacked the user may burn it on CD-ROM or export the update to hard disc, floppy or USB stick. The ChartSynC Client generates a valid S63 exchange set that may be immediately imported into the ECDIS.
